Welcome to the website of the Chew Valley Choral Society. We are a friendly mixed-voice choir of singers from across the Chew Valley and beyond. Our aim is to give singers the opportunity to sing various types of classical choral music and to perform it in venues mainly, but not exclusively, in the Chew Valley.
Our repertoire includes much-loved longer choral works, such as Handel's 'Messiah', but we also sing shorter pieces from the Renaissance to the 21st century and, sometimes, new compositions.
We are often joined by professional soloists and accompanists (mainly on the organ) and also work with orchestras from time to time. In addition, there is the occasional opportunity to join up with other choirs and groups in the area to take on larger scale projects in full-scale concert halls and cathedrals. Most recently, in May 2025, we joined Nailsea Choral Society to sing Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius in Clifton Cathedral.
We usually perform two concerts a year, one in late Autumn and one in April or May.
The group is welcoming and friendly, and the rehearsals are enjoyable and rewarding as well as challenging at times. It is a great opportunity to sing wonderful music together with other singers and appreciate the joys and proven benefits which live singing brings.
The choir is very fortunate to have an excellent accompanist in Rowan Vince, and is directed by internationally renowned composer, choir trainer, and organist David Bednall. David is Choral Director at Clifton Cathedral and also directs Bristol Chamber Choir and Bristol Bach Choir as well as having an extensive freelance career. He has much experience of working with groups of all abilities and works hard to ensure that each group realizes their potential in the most rewarding way possible.
